Fort Canning Green

Perched high above the sloping fields of Fort Canning Green is a family of nesting White Bellied Sea Eagles. Within sight (just barely) of all the exercise enthusiasts below, the parents can be seen flying in and out. Many of regulars I have spoken to say that they have been spotted a few weeks ago, and I have waited equally long before posting in the hope that the young has fledged. But you can try your luck to spot the birds. Just bring a pair of binoculars.

Kranji Marshes

Tucked away in Neo Tiew Lane 2 is a little-known nature reserve called Kranji Marshes. It is accessible by car or a shuttle (on weekends and public holidays) from the Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve Visitor Centre.

Right around the first bend of the park is a patch of tall reeds which is home to the Golden-back Weaver birds.

Hougang Avenue 10

Now you do not need to go to Jewel to catch a glimpse of this magnificently-endowed Mandarin Duck. Just head to Hougang canal! Best viewed from the rear, the variations of coloured feathers of this, considered by many to be the most beautiful duck in the world, is certainly awesome! Obviously an escapee, you can see the ring cuff on the left leg. Update: It has been reported that the bird has been returned to its rightful owner.

Little Guilin

Another beautiful scenic spot to visit is Little Guilin at Bukit Batok Town Park. If you are lucky you can spot the juvenile Grey-headed Fish Eagle perched on the branches of the dead tree across the lake (small circle). By the time I changed from shooting on my mobile phone to my main camera, it had flown further down the quarry.
