Fort Canning Green

Image
Perched high above the sloping fields of Fort Canning Green is a family of nesting White Bellied Sea Eagles. Within sight (just barely) of all the exercise enthusiasts below, the parents can be seen flying in and out. Many of regulars I have spoken to say that they have been spotted a few weeks ago, and I have waited equally long before posting in the hope that the young has fledged. But you can try your luck to spot the birds. Just bring a pair of binoculars.

Hougang Avenue 10

Now you do not need to go to Jewel to catch a glimpse of this magnificently-endowed Mandarin Duck. Just head to Hougang canal! Best viewed from the rear, the variations of coloured feathers of this, considered by many to be the most beautiful duck in the world, is certainly awesome! Obviously an escapee, you can see the ring cuff on the left leg. Update: It has been reported that the bird has been returned to its rightful owner.

Kranji Marshes

Image
Tucked away in Neo Tiew Lane 2 is a little-known nature reserve called Kranji Marshes. It is accessible by car or a shuttle (on weekends and public holidays) from the Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve Visitor Centre. Right around the first bend of the park is a patch of tall reeds which is home to the Golden-back Weaver birds.

Bishan Ang Mo Kio Park (Near Grub)

Image
Located in the Central region of Singapore, the Bishan Ang Mo Kio Park is beautifully landscaped with meandering streams and numerous lakes to attract all types of birds. Take a walk across the bridge towards the Cleansing Biotope in the Direction of GRUB. There you will find numerous species of Waxbills and Munias such as the Scaly-breasted Munia pictured here.

Bishan Ang Mo Kio Park (near Tse Tho Aun Temple)

The Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is home to so many varieties of birds. As you go upstream towards the Tse Tho Aum Temple (in the background) you can spot herons such as the Purple Heron pictured here feeding along the banks.

Hampstead Wetlands Park

Image
I get asked many times how far is the subject matter from the camera. So I decided to take a shot of the scenery at Hampstead Wetlands Park to give you an idea of how far the Sunda Pygmy Woodpeckers are. Seen here is a montage of the parent flying in to feed the chicks inside the small hole in the middle of the dead tree trunk.

Little Guilin

Image
Another beautiful scenic spot to visit is Little Guilin at Bukit Batok Town Park. If you are lucky you can spot the juvenile Grey-headed Fish Eagle perched on the branches of the dead tree across the lake (small circle). By the time I changed from shooting on my mobile phone to my main camera, it had flown further down the quarry.
